Sadie Wagner has always been devoted to her family. So when her stepfather is injured and can't work, she decides to leave home and accept a position as a clerk at the mercantile in Goldtree, Kansas. Goldtree also offers the opportunity to use her God-given singing talent--though the promised opera house is far different from what she imagined. With her family needing every cent she can provide, Sadie will do anything to keep her job.
Thad McKane comes to Goldtree at the request of the town council. The town has been plagued by bootlegging operations, and Thad believes he can find the culprit. After he earns enough money doing sheriff work, he wants to use it to pay for his training to become a minister.
Thad is immediately attracted to the beautiful singer who performs in Asa Baxter's unusual opera house, but when he hears her practicing bawdy tunes, he begins to wonder if she's far less innocent than she seems. And when Sadie appears to be part of the very crimes he's come to investigate, is there any hope the love blossoming between them will survive?
My Review:
As soon as I got this book in the mail yesterday I could not wait to read it. The cover is so beautiful and so I settled down to read it, though not planning to end up finishing it within the day. Sadie Wagner's character just fascinated me and drew me right in. I could feel her emotions of having to leave her family in order to provide for them or when she was wrestling with what to do do about a certain situation. I can't forget to mention the Melva and Shelva Baxter, the twin sisters that own the mercantile and take Sadie in, they are a hoot!! Most scenes that involved them had me laughing. Kim Vogel Sawyer weaves together a very interesting plot with many little details that keep the story going and make it more than a simple love story, actually it is no where near simple. There is also an excellent message in this book about how when you choose what goes against your morals and how it leads to a guilty conscience.
I have read several of Kim Vogel Sawyer's books and this one is one of her best and would highly recommend it to any one who enjoys a good historical romance filled with laughter, faith, romance and more. Final rating 5 stars out of 5!

I have not read Waiting for Summer's Return yet, though I believe I have it on my kindle. My favorites from her are My Heart Remembers and In ever Heartbeat.
I have heard of Stephanie Grace Whitson but have not read her yet, though I have one of her books also on my kindle when it was free awhile ago.
